Lannes, Jean, duke of Montebello
- Lannes, Jean, duke of Montebello
(1769-1809)
marshal of France
Born in Lectoure, Gers, where he enrolled in a battalion of volunteers during the revolution of 1789 (1792), Jean Lannes in 1795 became a brigadier general. He took part in the campaign in italy and followed Napoléon Bonaparte (see napoléon i) to Egypt. Having participated in the coup d'état of 18 Brumaire, Year VIII (November 9, 1799), he became commander of the Consular Guard. He contributed to the victory of Marengo and was made a marshal in 1804 and duke of Montebello in 1808. He fought in numerous other battles: Ulm, Austerlitz, Jena, Eylau, Friedland, and in Spain (victory of Tudela, November 1808, siege of Sara-gossa). Marshal Lannes was mortally wounded at Essling on May 22, 1809, and died after having both legs amputated. He was held in highest esteem by Bonaparte, who had his remains entombed in the Pantheon.
